This is my preferred investment for protection against chaos in markets. Sell costs are inexpensive. Common pure silver coins are easily sold, often to hedgers or even via local classifieds or ebay. But where you buy does matter. Cost can differ from merchant to metal exchanger by as much as 5% or even more. You will generally have to pay in money or wire transfer. For any seller giving you good pricing, the fee of credit card processing is just way too high. If your website takes credit cards, you are likely paying too much. Housing your gold can be an issue if you are purchasing large quantities.
Alternatively, you could put it in a safe deposit box.

Confiscation
Nationalization of precious metals is a legitimate concern for many people. The US government did it in 1933. Today, in the United States, the government was successful in robbing the independent investor from dealing with gold and silver on the forex markets. This move is aimed at keeping the middle class poorer while keeping the rich richer. Next move could very well be confiscation of everyone’s gold.
